UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Cup Albena: Jun (KOR) cruises into Men’s Final

Modern Pentathlon
  • Olympic bronze medallist dominates Fencing with huge score
  • Choong (GBR) and Seo (KOR) also comfortable in Semi-finals
  • Egypt, Hungary and Korea qualify three athletes apiece

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Woongtae Jun of Korea is poised to be one of the stars of Super Saturday at UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Cup Albena tomorrow.

The five-time World Cup winner performed superbly in the Fencing Ranking Round, scoring an exceptional 31V/4D, and may be in contention for a world record during the Bonus Round of the Men’s Final.

Knowing he had already given himself a massive lead heading into Semi-final B, Woongtae (KOR) took his foot off the pedal in the Laser Run and crossed the line in a group led by Ahmed Hamed of Egypt and Olympic champion Joseph Choong of Great Britain.

The result continued a prolific competition for Korea as Changwan Seo (KOR) finished first in Semi-final A, just ahead of team-mates Mohamed Elgendy and Mohanad Shaban (EGY) and Duilio Carrillo of Mexico.

Other notable names in the 18-strong Final line-up will include Pentathlon World Cup Cairo gold medallist Christopher Patte of France, Jinhwa Jung (KOR) and Hungary trio Balazs Szep, Richard Bereczki and Gergely Regos.

Todor Mihalev of Bulgaria also qualified to ensure the home crowd would have an athlete to cheer on Super Saturday.

The high standard of performance and fierce competition created by the elimination resulted in athletes of the calibre of Valentin Belaud (FRA) and Patrick Dogue (GER) missing out.
